I have a confession to make: I like CTIA Wireless. I'll be the first to admit that the show is dying, but the problem isn't it's place on the calendar like most people think. The problem is much simpler: It's the carriers. (Read Full Article)

Jefferies: Q1 could be 'weakest in years' for U.S. wireless carriers
Explore FierceWireless (Apr 12 2012) North America
U.S. wireless carriers could see the worst net customer additions in years during the first quarter, according to a research note from investment banking firm Jefferies & Company. The firm said that the U.S. wireless industry as a whole could experience its first ever net loss of postpaid subscribers during the period. "A Jefferies proprietary handset survey suggests volume expectations for 1Q are the weakest in years, in line with our view that net adds are significantly lower in the quarter after an iPhone launch," wrote Jefferies analysts Thomas Seitz and Kunal Madhukar in a recent note. The firm warned that there is typically a lull in carrier subscriber additions the quarter after Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) launches a new iPhone. Apple launched its new iPhone 4S during the fourth quarter of last year. Jefferies analysts wrote that the lull in the first quarter could be the biggest ever due to sluggish smartphone sales and lowered customer demand. Perhaps more importantly, the firm warned the lethargic growth could continue. "Over the longer term, we believe the wireless industry faces the twin headwinds of 100%+ penetration and, eventually, decelerating smartphone additions as the base reaches saturation," Jefferies' analysts wrote. "Voice revenues ... (Read Full Article)

Verizon dominates LTE today, but which operators will lead in 2016?
Explore FierceWireless (Apr 9 2012) LTE , North America
The wireless industry is returning to its roots: The world is coalescing around LTE technology, creating a shared, global standard for the first time since the days of analogue. And the global move toward LTE comes as little surprise, since the technology promises more efficient and faster networks, lower equipment costs through economies of scale, and broad support from suppliers and carriers. Already, as of February, there were 52 fully commercial LTE networks in operation and more than 300 LTE-enabled devices available in the market, according to consulting firm Signals and Systems Telecom. Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) dominates the LTE landscape today in terms of its network coverage, subscribers and devices. But where are things heading in the future? Special report

Will today's next-generation MVNOs shake up the U.S. market?
Explore FierceWireless (Apr 3 2012) LTE , North America
América Móvil's U.S. TracFone unit has racked up millions of subscribers over the past few years, especially with its Straight Talk monthly unlimited offering, which last year added Android phones to its arsenal. Yet the company, which operates as an MVNO of all four of the Tier 1 carriers, does not offer any groundbreaking service beyond its cut-rate $45 price tag.
Nevertheless, there is a new breed of MVNOs that are just starting to find their place in the U.S. wireless market. These MVNOs are offering services the major carriers are not yet providing--including family data plans--and are hoping that their points of differentiation take hold with consumers who are looking for something new.
MVNOs in the United States are, of course, nothing new, though the market has evolved considerably since its heyday in the mid-2000s (think Amp'd Mobile and Disney Mobile), and is now more about prepaid unlimited plans than ever before. Today, innovative startup MVNOs like Republic Wireless and Ting are trying to challenge the status quo alongside more traditional MVNOs, including Simple Mobile and H2O Wireless. Yet analysts and even the MVNOs themselves don't think they are going to revolutionize the market ...

Of all the confusing technology terms used in consumer marketing today, perhaps the most opaque is “4G,” used to describe a new, much faster generation of cellular data on smartphones, tablets and other devices. It sounds simple, but there are many varieties of 4G and conflicting claims. AT&T claims “The nation’s largest 4G network,” and T-Mobile says it has “America’s largest 4G network.” Verizon Wireless boasts “America’s fastest 4G network,” and Sprint says it had the first 4G network.
